In an unprecedented scheduling error, all bridges crossing Bayou Lafourche are set to undergo maintenance simultaneously, causing significant disruption to local traffic. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) confirmed that each bridge had been assigned its own project coordinator, but a lack of communication among teams led to the closures being scheduled on the same day.
The closures come amidst budget overruns for the ongoing Golden Meadow Bridge repair. To address funding shortfalls, officials have announced plans to install toll booths on both the LA 1 and LA 308 sides of all Bayou Lafourche bridges. The tolls, described as a “temporary measure,” will remain in place until funding needs for both the Golden Meadow Bridge repair and toll booth installations are met. Current estimates suggest this could take until July 2030 at the earliest—or as late as mid-September 2130, according to some projections.
Detour Plan for Commuters
During the closures, all traffic will be rerouted to the Highway 90 overpass in Matthews. Motorists will need to loop onto Highway 90, head west toward Houma, and then travel east on Highway 182 to reconnect with LA 1 for southbound travel. The detour is expected to add significant travel time for many commuters.
Golden Meadow resident Michael “Shawee” Barrios, who lives in the Pwant subdivision and works as a forklift operator at C-Port 2 in Port Fourchon, expressed his frustration. “Damn, all of da bridges? Guess I gotta get up a lil early to get to work next week,” he said. Despite the detour adding an estimated three hours to his daily commute, Barrios assured his employer that he will be punctual.
Tolls and Estimated Costs
The exact cost of the tolls is still under discussion, but initial estimates suggest a fee of $3.50 per crossing, per direction. However, the Highway 90 overpass will remain toll-free, offering some relief for detoured drivers.
Local officials acknowledge the inconvenience but emphasize that the tolls are a necessary measure to address critical infrastructure needs. Updates on the toll implementation and progress of the repairs will be provided in the coming weeks.
I think ya’ll get enough money from our taxes and the toll bridge to go to fourchon and Gand Isle now ya’ll want us to pay to cross the bayou that’s bull shit all the politician are keeping the money not use it for what it’s for .
I did not vote for that . Assclowns
That’s total bs. Enough taxes are paid. If the money was used right, there would be no worries.
What about the kids that go to South Lafourche High, they will have to catch the bus at 3 or 4am to make it to school on time. It’s bad enough my granddaughter catches the bus at 5:50am already.
What about the kids that go to south lafourche high school, it’s bad enough my granddaughter catches the bus before 6am. So now she will have to catch it at 4am to be at school on time?
