In a story that sounds more like legend than fact, a Cajun man known only as “King Tu Fu” is being hailed as a hero after saving a Nile River tour boat from colliding with what experts are calling a “rare, freak iceberg.”
The bizarre incident occurred Tuesday evening near Cairo, where dozens of tourists were aboard the Nile River boat, sightseeing vessel cruising down the river. According to witnesses, an unusually large chunk of glacial ice — believed to have drifted south after breaking from a Mediterranean cold front — appeared suddenly in the boat’s path.
Panic broke out as passengers and crew struggled to steer clear of the frozen obstacle. That’s when King Tu Fu, a Lafourche native on holiday, leapt into action.
“He just ran up, grabbed the wheel, and shouted, ‘iceberg!’ in the thickest Cajun accent I ever heard,” said passenger Angela Ramirez from Madrid. “He spun that boat like he’d been captaining shrimp boats his whole life.”
Witnesses say King Tu Fu, who once worked shrimp boats in the leville area, used his experience with unpredictable waters to guide the tour boat into a safe current, narrowly avoiding disaster. The boat brushed against the iceberg but sustained no serious damage. No injuries were reported.
Local authorities remain baffled by the appearance of an iceberg in the Nile. “This is unprecedented,” said Dr. Nabil Ashraf, an environmental scientist in Cairo. “Icebergs do not belong in this climate, but global weather patterns are increasingly unpredictable.”
Despite the scientific mystery, most attention has focused on the unlikely hero. Videos of King Tu Fu, in his transition lenses and collared t-shirt, directing the crew with shouts of “BOTH HANDS BODIYAN” have already gone viral on social media.
Officials say King Tu Fu has declined any monetary reward, insisting instead that the tour company serve every future passenger a 4 piece from popeyes chicken.
“He saved us,” said British tourist Martin Gray. “If not for him, we’d have been the first Nile Titanic. Now we just call him the Pharaoh of Cajun Courage.”
For now, King Tu Fu continues his travels through Egypt, reportedly telling locals, “Ain’t no river too fu for TU FU .”
